What It's Like Working With Me

Relationships Can Get Stuck

Relationships are one of the most important parts of our lives, but maintaining a healthy connection isn't always easy. Couples often seek counseling because communication has broken down, conflict keeps repeating, emotional or physical intimacy has changed, trust has been damaged, or they simply don't feel as connected as they once did.

Sometimes there is a specific event that brings a couple to counseling. Other times, the distance develops gradually. Small frustrations turn into resentment, assumptions replace conversations, and partners begin reacting to each other instead of really hearing each other.

Why Couples Seek Counseling

You don't have to be at the end of your relationship to benefit from couples counseling. Couples come in for many different reasons, including communication problems, recurring arguments, trust or infidelity, intimacy concerns, parenting disagreements, financial stress, differences in expectations, extended family issues, major life transitions, or simply feeling disconnected.

Often, the issue a couple is arguing about isn't the entire problem. Underneath an argument about money, household responsibilities, sex, parenting, or time together may be a deeper feeling of not being appreciated, understood, prioritized, respected, or supported.

Understanding Your Pattern

When I work with couples, I'm not there to determine who is right and who is wrong. Instead, we look at the patterns that have developed between you.

We'll slow conversations down and identify what happens when conflict begins. What are you trying to communicate? What does your partner hear? When does defensiveness, criticism, withdrawal, resentment, or frustration take over? And what does each person actually need from the other?

Understanding the pattern helps us move away from blaming each other and toward understanding what needs to change.

A Practical Approach to Couples Counseling

My approach is active, collaborative, and practical. We don't just talk about your relationship. We work on the skills and behaviors that can improve it.

Depending on what is happening in your relationship, we may focus on communicating more effectively, managing conflict, expressing needs, understanding each other's perspectives, addressing resentment, rebuilding trust and intimacy, clarifying expectations, or strengthening the everyday connection between you.

I also encourage both partners to look at their own role in the relationship. Lasting change becomes much more possible when the focus shifts from “What does my partner need to change?” to “What can we each do differently?”

Building Something Better

The goal of couples counseling isn't to create a relationship where you never disagree. Disagreement is part of being in a relationship.

The goal is to help you handle those moments differently. To communicate without tearing each other down. To listen without immediately becoming defensive. To repair after conflict. To understand what your partner needs while also being able to express what you need.

Ultimately, I want you to leave couples counseling with more than insight. I want you to have practical strategies you can continue using long after therapy ends.

Real strategies. Meaningful change.
